Do I have to put a bleed on my materials for printing?
Ken Bischof, President and CEO United Printing
For the best-print results, artwork and designs should be setup at least 3 mm bigger than the intended finish size.
For example, if you want a business card that is 2 inches x 3.5 inches (and have images and colors that run off the edges); you must add another 3mm to the original document.
If the document does not require a bleed because it’s elements are within its boundaries, it is not necessary to include a bleed, however, a white border will print around the edges. A good rule of thumb is to always include a bleed.

Good info. I’ve heard the term a lot and never knew what it meant.
Thanks!
That is very helpful to know. I print a lot of things for my business and have heard the term before as well. Great explanation!
Thanks again!
