How does B2B marketing differ from B2C marketing?

Bridget GoldsackBridget Goldsack, Niche Publications Coordinator

The term, B2B, refers to the sales practice commonly referred to as Business-to-Business. B2B communications and sales generally target companies and organizations, while B2C, or Business-to-Consumer, communications and sales are typically aimed at individual customers.

B2B purchasing decisions are generally made on a more rational level compared to B2C purchasing decisions, which are often more emotional. For example, the decision by a corporation to invest in a million dollar software application would likely be done in a series of rational steps which might include research and formal approval. Compare this with a B2C purchasing decision that might be as simple as seeing a product at the store and making an immediate decision.

For that reason, the aim of B2C advertising is often to appeal to emotion, whereas the aim of B2B advertising is generally to create awareness or to educate.
